Michael Ciaramella was the best surfer of day. He got the best scores and surfed smart to win Open Juniors, Explorer Juniors and Explorer Boys. As Mikey matures and gets stronger, he is now a legitimate threat to any surfer in the Mens and Juniors Divisions. He proved it Sunday.

Rob Kelly Blows Up

ROB KELLY GETS RAW AT HIS HOMEBREAK FOR THE NSSA NE CONFERENCE’S THIRD EVENT OF THE SEASON

Nationals are over and the kids are back in town.  Just one week after many surfers returned from California, they all packed up to make the drive (or bike ride) to 7^th Street in Ocean City, NJ, for the NSSA NE Conference’s third event of the season.  The surf was small but that didn’t stop the NE’s surfers from blowing up. 

Ocean City’s own Rob Kelly unanimously dominated the Open Mens, Explorer Mens, and Explorer Juniors finals.  After just returning from Nationals, where he lost in the Quarterfinals, Rob knew he had to step up his surfing for the double pointed event. In the Explorer Mens final Zack Humphreys almost snagged the victory in a close battle, but Rob had his mind set on taking home all three divisions and he wasn’t going to let anyone stop him.  He showed he was serious when he pulled a sick air reverse on what seemed to be a nothing wave. 

Younger brother Chris Kelly also showed local knowledge when he destroyed 7^th Street’s peaky conditions to place 3^rd in front of heavy hitter Philip Goold, Zack Humpreys, and Ian Bloch in Explorer Juniors. 

The Open Juniors final saw explosive surfing by New York’s Balaram Stack and New Jersey’s Ian Bloch and TJ Mortellaro.  Balaram claimed the first place spot with solid top to bottom surfing on the wave of the day. Close behind was Bloch (2^nd) and Mortellaro (3^rd).

When it comes to the Explorer Boys final, there is always some heavy competition amongst the groms. Michael Agnew stole the show when he came in first ahead of finalist regular Mikey Ciaramella.   

Qunicy Davis used her size to her advantage on the small waves and won the Explorer Womens division.  In the Explorer Girls final, Rachel Nessuno beat out Quincy for the win. The Explorer Longboard final saw some heavy competition, but it was another Ocean City local who took the win: Mark Richards.

The Tables are Turning in the Northeast

Atlantic City hosts yet another exciting NE Conference event in solid waist high surf out front of the famous Showboat Casino.  The second event of the season was a wake-up call for some New Jersey surfers when half the Open Mens finalists were from Virginia Beach.

The power-packed Open Men’s division showcased Virginia Beach’s most talented surfers, and Philip Goold was the star.  Goold had to first take out New Jersey locals Zack Humphreys (2^nd) and Ben Graeff (3^rd) before claiming the Open Mens win. But the battle between the VB and NJ surfers continued into the Explorer Juniors final where Zack Humphreys’ vertical backside snaps won him the Explorer Juniors final in front of Philip Goold.  Ian Bloch capped off a solid performance with a win in Open Juniors. And new comer Pat Schmidt, grabbed his first win in the Open Boys Division.

The Explorer Boys final was another heat where the underdogs came out on top.  Sean Santiago stole the win in front of T.J. Mortallero (2^nd) and super grom Mike Ciaramella (3^rd).  Mike wasn’t going to go home empty-handed though, he beat out competitors John Forkin (2^nd) and Pete Machotka (3^rd) to take the Explorer Longboard final. Tina Spadafora showed that her time in Cali, while attending SDU, was not wasted as she blew away the the competition in Explorer Women. And Rachael Nessuno looked great out there as she won Explorer Girls.

The NE Conference surfers keep stepping up the level of competition at every event and are sure to be a force to reckon with at the 2006 National Championships.
